Kazhanjikolu||Ancient Weighing Scale from Kerala || Antique Weighing Device||Episode Number: 53

It’s regarding an ancient measuring device called “Kazhanjikolu”.

It consists of a stick, which is attached to a weighing balance.

And that’s made with coconut shell.

This coconut shell will make shape with a knife.

This coconut shell part is used for keeping items which needed to weigh.

There are three holes in the coconut shell, which is used to tie three small ropes, which is attached to a small clip that is made with brass on a stick.

There are some markings on the stick, which represents the units.

Similarly, there are three “X” markings on the stick.

They are also used as a scale to weigh items.

There is a small rope on the stick too.

Which can be adjusted and kept over the “X” markings to keep the weighing balance straight.

Depends on the weight of the items, need to adjust the rope over the stick, towards front and back.

Usually this is used when making ayurvedic medicines like “ kashayam “ which is prepared by using leaves, and roots of plants.

Those leaves and roots can be measured by using this scale.

In this scale, we can measure ayurvedic units like “Kazhanju” and “Palam “.

Keep any form of leaves or roots on the scale.

After keeping the required item to be weighed, adjust the rope over to the stick towards front or back, until it balances the weighing beam.

We can only weigh very small units by this weighing scale.

If more amount of medicine needed to be weighed, then use another scale called “Thlakolu”.

That also looks same, but it has a lengthy stick with big scale on it.

One Palam = 48 grams.

Usually there will be prescription from doctor for making Kashaya.

We need to purchase those items from the local ayurvedic shop.

Every day will prepare “Kashaya “ freshly at home after taking all items which is required for making it , should be weighed with this scale.

That is the use of “Kazhanjikol “at house.

Now all these medicines are prepared wholesale in factories.

So no need to use this scale now a days.

Even this scale is used to prepare medicinal oil too.

This scale has more than 70 years old.

Still the entire parts of it looks good and works great.

Hope the stick is made of wild jack tree (Artocarpus Hirsutus,Family – Moraceae ) or from Indian Red wood tree ( Caesalpenia Sappan , Family – Fabaceaae ).

While looking , it is a small stick, but actually its bit heavy.

One of the marking is to measure with “ Kazhanju “ and the other one is to measure in “Palam “ and the middle one with” X” marking is where to keep rope  to adjust and make the balancing beam straight.

Please comment if anyone knows more information regarding the weighing scale.

Thank you
