Varakalam||Special Earthen Pot From Kerala|| Ep No :73

 



Varakalam is a special earthen pot , which is a traditional vessel from Kerala.



It is a wide mouth special earthen pot.

The top half part is made by using pot making wheels and the bottom part is made by tapping mud with hands.

This earthen pot not require seasoning.

The price of the pot is Indian Rupees 350/-.

It has a coating of mud inside the vessel.

It can be used for dry fry coffee seeds, tamarind seeds, jack fruit  seeds etc.

And can be used for dry roasting the dishes.

Now a days this pot is coming from Palakkad district of Kerala to different regions of the state.

This is a heavy vessel with thick bottom.

Now a days these types of pots are manufactured in Shenkottai town , Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu.

There are Varakalam pots which is of small sizes too.

Wash well the pot with coconut husk under running water and sun dry before first use.

After use, wipe with clean towel,dry and keep upside down safely.

The dishes prepared in this pot has a special taste.

Try to get a medium size varakalam, if have a fire wood facility in the kitchen or at home.

Mostly seen such pots in northern districts of Kerala like Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki.

Easily available in those shops sales earthen pots in large scale especially in the Northern parts of Kerala.
